A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
